I may have posted this before, but can't remember. Regarding Missouri scoundrels, one family in NW Saline County has one of those great oral traditions. Sometime probably 1864 or after, some Union bushwhackers came through and at a little location known as Akin's Store (close to Jesseville) began robbing the Akin or Tillery family. Two were young boys about 12-14 and I guess an old man their grandpa was there. The bushwackers took him off to the pasture to get him to gather up his horses for them to steal, and the 2 boys followed unknown to them. After the old man pointed out the horses, they simply shot him dead. This had a profound impact on the two boys. Jump ahead now 10 years.. enough information regarding the identity and home area of the leader during the incident was remembered by the boys and they journeyed off to Missour in search of some retribution. They actually found the man who was the leader of the group, and were able to bring him back to Saline County where they took him out to the very same pasture and repaid him in kind for his deed. Then, as the story goes, they cut the top of his skull off, boiled all the meat and hide away and then used the curved top portion of the skull as a soap dish on the back porch. Them boys harbored some deep revenge let me tell you! This came from a descendant of one of the boys. No published documentation exists so no way to know the absolute accuracy but interesting none the less.
