Re: Understanding the 3rd Confederate

Terry, yes there were two Mississippi companies, whose organization Hindman seems to have something to do with -- one source states that he financed the companies. Hindman expended a great deal of personal funds to finance a "Legion" -- similar to the famous Hampton Legion of South Carolina. The two Mississippi companies were organized in and around Vicksburg, as was the artillery battery of his Legion -- the Warren Light Artillery.

Here is a list of the companies which composed the 18th (Marmaduke's) Arkansas Infantry --

Co. A--Little Rock Grays (Pulaski County, Arkansas)
Co. B--Young Guard (Shelby County, Tennessee)
Co. C--Fletcher Rifles (Mississippi County, Arkansas)
Co. D--Shamrock Guards (Warren County, Mississippi)
Co. E--Linden Dead-Shots (Randolph County, Arkansas)
Co. F--Chalk Bluff Rebels (Greene County, Arkansas)
Co. G--Pine Bluff Artillery (Jefferson County, Arkansas)
Co. H--Swamp Rangers (Warren County, Mississippi)
Co. I--Burrowville Mountain Guards (Searcy County, Arkansas)
Co. K--Rector Guards (Searcy County, Arkansas)

It was because of the multi-state character of the regiment that it was redesignated as a "Confederate" regiment.
