He was erroneously reported on the regimental rolls as having died as a POW at Camp Douglas, near Chicago, Illinois. In fact, he was exchanged at City Point, Virginia, on April 10, 1863, and was admitted to hospital at Williamsburg, Virginia, on April 11. He had apparently contracted smallpox in prison. He was transferred to the Smallpox Hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, where he died on April 18, 1863. He was interred in Blandford Cemetery at Petersburg.
