The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

That's right, Bruce. As I said in an earlier post, the 85,000+ men includes not only Arkansans who served in organizations from other states, but also men from other states who served in Arkansas organizations. The largest contingent of these was Missourians, with smaller numbers from the border areas of Louisiana and Texas. In addition, Arkansas regiments serving east of the Mississippi occasionally picked up a few recruits in the area they were marching through and camping in -- quite a few men in Mississippi, smaller numbers in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, etc., and just a handful in Virginia.

On a different point, one of the unexpected dividends from my database was the emergence of clear enlistment patterns (on the Confederate side). This was something I hadn't thought or cared about when I was doing the research -- it just sort of popped out, and has made subsequent research immeasurably easier. Roughly nine out of ten Arkansans enlisted in companies organized in their home counties. You can always find isolated exceptions, of course, but this pattern holds true at least 90 percent of the time.
