I realise this post is a little old, but hoping to get some replies anyway. : ) I have been trying to figure out what my Great Great Grandmother was doing ( as far as work and everyday life, etc. ) living in Helena, Arkansas and surrounding areas during the Civil War and after- especially during 1880. In 1880 I cannot find her in any census anywhere, no matter what state. However I do find her 2 children ages 11 and 9 in Mississippi County, AR in the 1880 census working for and living with 2 seperate families who are not related to my Great Great Grandmother.

She is widowed (with no children) in 1861 at 17 years of age. Her father and stepmother both die in 1862, but I do not know why they died. (I cannot find where her parents are buried either). She has an older brother who is in the Civil War in the Desha County Battalion Arkansas Militia. She has younger brothers and sisters who are sent off to live with other people. (who I don't know). Her father owned a lot of land in Napoleon, AR and surrounding areas. In fact, I believe the family actually lived on an Island in or near Napoleon, AR. Her father also owned a store and a "trading boat". His route was going up to St. Louis and down to New Orleans and back.

She married in 1864 and had 2 children in the 1870 census. She is listed as farming. However her husband is not listed on the census. I found him on the Mortality Schedule as having died from TB.

As I stated before, I cannot find her at all, in any state, anwhere in the 1880 census. Her 2 children are working for and living with 2 different families in the 1880 Census for Mississippi County, AR. My Great Great Grandmother is not in Mississippi County, AR with them... The families they are living with are not related to my Great Great Grandmother.

I do find her rmarried in 1883 in Drew County, AR. I have quite a bit of information after 1883 until she dies in 1911. I have information also on her children from 1883 on.

It is a mystery to me. I know life was very very hard during and after the Civil War in AR. I am trying to figure out what she was doing during the time she was not farming. I have some theories, but I have already written a book here, so I am going to stop!

I look forward to everyone's responses. Everyone on this forum is so knowledgable!

Thank you so much! jenicoe2001@yahoo.com
