The North also had a steady stream of European immigrants desperate for work. Contrary to legend, only a tiny percentage of Irish immigrants went right into the Union army. The overwhelming majority went right into the northern labor market instead. This, and the rapid development of all sorts of labor saving machinery, kept the northern wartime economy going despite the immense manpower demands of the Union army and navy.
