Does anyone have a good description of how conscription really worked. I know most the early regiments were comprised of volunteer companies, some of which existed under the old militia laws, but most of which were recruited about the time the state seceeded. Later there are lots of refrences to Hindman ruthlessly enforceing the conscription laws to build his forces, but was there any signigigant difference between the raising of a volunteer company and the rasing of a conscripted company? Do we have a good understanding of which units were all volunteer and which one were mostly conscripted?
