nother question for Bryan & Doyle

Looking for literature on desertions in the southern army I came across the book " More damning than slaughter, Desertions in the Confederate army". There was an arrangement - and it had to be simple for me to be able to use it - whereby you could open it and read a few pages to determine if you wanted to buy it .One statement caught my eye.... " the official number of desertions in the confederate army was 103,400". I had never encountered that figure before. Do you give it any credence? With all the movement by individuals within the army how can they establish a firm number? Just curious and wanted your comments.'
