Almost all soldiers who where serving in the east after the fall of Vicksburg that where in the west at the time on furlough, recuriting duty etc, could not get back to their command where carried as AWOL/deserters although many joined other commands this also went for POWs who where exchanged at New Orleans and Galveston.
