According to Stephen Sears on page 71 in his book "Chancellorsville" the return of the Army of the Potomac in January 1863 showed that 30% of all absentees from that army, were deserters, or approximately 14,500 men out of 48,000 absentees. I am assuming that this was over a two month period.
