These figures come from the index of a book I had not picked up in a long time. I recognized the figure he quoted and found the book. “Desertions during the Civil War” compiled in 1928 from the O.R.s. Reprinted it is available on Amazon.

I am sure the figures are incorrect because I have found several men who were listed as deserters were actually in the hospital or in another company. The author completely ignored that fact if they saw it at all. They only expound on the reasons for desertion.

The figure does not include 1,028 officers listed as deserters and not spoken of again.

The book does bring up some interesting points, such as the Union shipped at least 500 Confederate deserters to foreign countries and not all of them were foreigners. I meant to research that but have not.
