From my understanding of the layout of the present day park, and the few terrain points that are there, that most of the Union positions that were not washed away lay outside the present day parks boundries. And of course the river itself has changed course a couple of time over the years and what was the river 150 years ago are oxbow lakes. Then you have the 1950's McClellan-Kerr navigational system that channelizing the Arkansas River that changed the river system again.

So if you are looking at some of the period maps and the maps contained in the histories it is somewhat hard to figure out just exactly where everything took place. As I said because the majority intertest of the National Parks service is not on the Battle, the battlefield itself is not interpreted well and with very few signs or aids to help you. What little of the Confederate rifle pits that are left are the very far left of the Confederate lines furtherest away from the Fort.

Do you know if your ancestors were some of those who even got off the Union Transport? Or were they maybe some of those who went on up the White River with the Union fleet to DeVal's Bluff?
