After looking at a current map I realize that the trench line in question is actually on the same side of the river as Ft. Hindman but on the other side of the Ark. river canal. These would have been the first line of trenches encountered after the Union troops put ashore at Notrebe's plantation. Its amazing how much the river has changed in that area since the Civil War.
