As a Mason I can attest that one Mason would not use the Masonic sign of distress to decieve another. First, another Mason would have to recognize and give an approprite response. Second, if this were to happen it goes against Masonic Law to harm another Mason. Unless you have credible proof this strikes me as another instance whereby an unfounded rumor was started.

The Masonic signs have been used in wars throughout history. Including all wars fought by the United States. Generally, this is done by someone captured by the enemy for protection. If answered I know of no instance whereby the person giving or recieving such sign was ever betrayed by the other.

Further, the 'dead angle' your speaking refers to the Arkansas Peace Society predominately made of N. Central Arkansas Counties. The so-called secret oath was fabricated primarily by two men who betrayed the so called 'Society'. If they betrayed their own then how can they be trusted? This Society was passive citizens who wanted no part of the war on either side and defended one another from roving bands of outlaws and jayhawkers.

I have read several versions of this purported oath and find it similar to the Masonic Oath. We are oft accused of secret blood oaths and such and through-out history the Masons have been accused of every despeakable act imiganable. None have every proved true. If such can be proved I would like very much to see and investigate these accusations to present them to the Grand Lodges of the States involved for their response.
