Re: Re-Organization in May 1862

What happened to Gillespie is a good question. The Wikipedia article claims Gillespie was wounded at Chickamauga, but lists no source and there are some problems with this. The Chickamauga report was written on October 5 by Lt. Col. Peter Snyder listing himself as the current regimental commander but states Gillespie was in command both days at Chickamauga. Furthermore. Govan's report which includes the death of Colonel Featherston and the wounding of Lt. Col. Baucom does not mention anything happening to Gillespie. However, in Snyder's report, which is very short, he continually says "we" did this and "we" did that until the final paragraph when following Turchin's flank attack, he states, I withdrew my command" indicating Gillespie had in fact been wounded during one of the movements across the Layfayette Road on the 20th. After a cursory examination, it appears Snyder commanded the combined regiments until the final consolidation of the Arkansas regiments.
