Re: Re-Organization in May 1862

David

Since you seem to follow Govan's Brigade, maybe you can help me undersand the command structure of Govan's Brigde at Franklin. I have copied an exchange from the archives below from which I draw the following conclusions:

1. 6th and 7th Consolidated Arkansas Infantry Regiment, under the command of CPT J.T. Robinson and the 8th & 19th Consolidated Arkansas Infantry Regiment under the command of MAJ D.H. Hamiter, remained seperate, but very small regiments.
2. The remainder of Govan's Brigade was consolidated into one consoidated regiment, under command of Colonel Peter Green of the 5th Arkansas.
3. This consolidated regiment was composed of the remants of the following units:

1st & 15th Arkansas -- CPT A.C. Hockersmith

2nd & 24th Arkansas -- CPT J.K. Phillips

5th & 13th Arkansas -- Colonel Peter V. Green

Do you have any thoughts on this?

Govans Brigade at FranklinBy:Willie
Date: Friday, 27 August 2004, 11:50 am I am looking for any information on Govans Brigade at Franklin, is there a list of casualties? Where the units consolidated I know the 6th and 7th and the 8& 19th but I was told the rest fought under the 5 & 13ths colors. I have read that they had a 66% causalities rate also. Who was the staff officers for the 5 & 13th I know the Colonel was Peter Green did they have a Major and a Lt. Colonel and if so, what was their fate at Franklin?

Thanks Willie

Most of Govan's regiments (more like batalions at that point) were under the command of the senior captains at Franklin, save for the 8th&19th which was under their major.

The order of battle for Spring Hill & Franklin was this:

Brigade -- BG Daniel C. Govan

1st & 15th Arkansas -- CPT A.C. Hockersmith
2nd & 24th Arkansas -- CPT J.K. Phillips
6th & 7th Arkansas -- CPT J.T. Robinson
8th & 19th Arkansas -- MAJ D.H. Hamiter
5th Arkansas & 3rd Confederate -- LTC E.A. Howell

Brigade effective strength was approximately 550, plus or minus a dozen or so, so each battalion fielded around 100-110 rifles. The 3rd Confederate had 47 men left on the march into Franklin, for example.

It's tough to follow some of these units in 1864 because in the last month of the Atlanta campaign, they swapped around when Polk's Brigade was broken up after the Army fell back into the outer defenses of Atlanta, then with Hood's counterattacks at Atlanta and the little incident at Jonesboro, the battle reports are few and far between... about the last one completed was for May and June, '64.

COL Colquitt, CO of the 1st & 15th, lost a leg near Bald Hill in the battle of Atlanta, July 22, and was medically retired from the service. In the same battle, LTC William H. Martin was wounded. MAJ Stinson Little was sick in hospital at Jonesboro from the middle of May ('64) onward, and apparently did not return to the regiment again. From Jonesboro onward, CPT Alfred C. Hockersmith (Co. E, from Benton) commanded until Martin recovered from his wound and rejoined the regiment in front of Nashville. Hockersmith apparently made it through Franklin, as he appeared as part of the regiment at Nashville when Martin returned.
