I took the lead in correcting the many typos, etc. and pulled up their records for the procurement of VA tombstones.
Just before we received them and were to place, I published on the internet the listing. Got a response from one ancestor that stated his soldier was not buried in Vicksburg, but in a family cemetery in Texas. I advised the leader of the SCV unit placing the stones, suggesting we forward the stone to Texas. He declined and placed it anyway in Vicksburg.
Additionally, we found that one of the soldiers already had a VA stone which was among those originally set back in the 1970s. Not only that, but he had a private stone placed many, many years before, just to the rear of the VA stone section. In this case, this brave soldier has three stones set in Vicksburg.
These kind of incidents drive genealogists crazy!
