Re: Samuel Evans and incorrect VA Markers

Anthony, James W. Herndon does not appear in the 1860 Bradley County census, but there is a record of Federal land patents in the name of James Herndon in Bradley County, in 1857 and 1860. As you know, Co. G, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, was raised in Bradley County. It was mustered into service at Memphis on June 10, 1861, at which time Private J. W. Herndon's age was listed as 23, which would indicate he was born c1838.

James Herndon, presumably the man who owned the land patents, was born c1821 in Alabama. He served in Crawford's Arkansas Battalion, and later Hardy's Arkansas Regiment, then enlisted in Co. K, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U.S. Volunteers. His wife Ann is listed in an 1863 list of families of indigent soldiers in Bradley County.

So obviously there were Herndon's living in Bradley County during the war, but are not listed in the 1860 census.
