General:
[William] Harts battery was 20 miles on the Pine Bluff road at one o�clock yesterday, moving slowly on account of the extreme hot weather and bad condition of horses and roads. He has only about one fourth the proper number of men. - Will need about 60 more. - They should be detailed and ready to report to him when he arrives. - A courier might hurry him on. Gen [Mosby] Parsons wrote me, before he crossed the Mississippi, that he had plenty of ammunition. - I will send 20 rounds for 1000 men, at the earliest moment possible. - It is more than half of my entire supply. At the Same time, I think you must be mistaken in saying that you have none at all. � Gen [Albert] Pike wrote me, that he furnished Col [Charles L.] Dawson 150 rounds, and that officer was instructed not to expend a single cartridge till specially ordered. - I have given no such order. - Ascertain and report immediately what has become of his ammunition. - There ought to be enough for your entire armed infantry force, exclusive of Parsons.
