John Wycliffe Shoptaw enlisted as a private in Co. D, Williamson's Battalion Arkansas Infantry, at Russellville, Arkansas, on February 13, 1862. Williamson's battalion was broken up during the general reorganization of the army on May 25, 1862, and its companies were assigned to other commands. Company D was assigned to the 1st (Stirman's) Battalion Arkansas Cavalry as Company F, Capt. James W. Russell commanding. Private Shoptaw reportedly died in a hospital at Columbus, Mississippi, on October 15, 1863. I believe the year of death is incorrect, and, in my opinion, should be 1862. In October 1863, the Stirman's battalion was back in Arkansas, having been surrendered and paroled at Vicksburg in July of that year, and sent to Arkansas to await exchange.
