Regarding the source that I could not confirm, it was taken from this older posting on this board by Bryan Howerton:

Gene, if you're referring to Matlock's Battalion, it had no numerical designation that I'm aware of. It was only briefly mounted, and shortly thereafter formed the core of the 32nd Arkansas Infantry.
Here's something you might be interested in -- this is from the "Record of Events" of Company A, dated April 30, 1863, describing actions of the company a year earlier (April and May 1862) when it was still a mounted company (spelling and punctuation as per original document):
"A scouting party under Lt. (now Capt.) Poe 23 April 1862 advanced to Smithville in Lawrence Co. Ark. in a few miles of the advance of the enemy under Gen. Curtis. The enemy surrounded the place, captured two of the horses which the men were forced to abandon. The Lieut. narrowly escaped by the fleetness of his horse Ginger after a chase of several miles. The men all made their escape. Sergt Major E. G. Williams put on the backwoodsman, mingled freely with the enemy, catechised them until an opportunity offered to escape. May 17, scout under same officer attacked a foraging party of the enemy on Little Red River. Killed & wounded several. Drove the enemy away and captured 2 wagons and trane and one prisoner. May 18, 1862, scout under Capt. Hicks (now Lt. Col.) attacked the enemy's out posts at Searcy Landing on Little Red River. Drove in their pickets, wounding one. The enemy reinforced with 200 men when a brisk fight was kept up for nearly ½ an hour when the enemy retreated across the river with the loss of 2 killed and 9 wounded. May 19/62, the entire Co. was engaged in the desperate fight of Whitney's Lane near Searcy, Ark. against a foraging party of infantry & cavalry of the enemy. A Co. of Col. Parsons Texas Cavalry was also in this action. The Co. lost one taken prisoner and 5 wounded - none severely. Young Sasson, a private of Capt. Hookers Co., volunteered for the fight was also killed. One citizen also killed. June 28, the Co. having been attached to the Regt then Col. Matlocks, June 15, 1862, with 5 other Cos. of the Regt under command of Capt. Hicks (now Lt. Col.) attacked the enemy in force and in position on White River near Grand Glaize. The battle commenced near night and was continued till the last of the enemys guns could be distinctly seen in the darkness. The enemys loss 90 killed & wounded. Confed. loss 1 killed & 4 wounded. The enemy was driven from the field. July 8, was in the fight near Cotton Plant on Cache River under Gen. Rust. July 11/62, Co. was dismounted. Was in the campaign in N.W. Ark. under Gen. Hindman, and at the battle of Prairie Grove. Lost in this battle 2 killed and 3 wounded. The Co. has never been furnished with Company books or blanks and on this account the history of the Co. has been imperfectly kept
