Re: Graybeards?

Len thank you very much for this information about the residuaries wear the regulation uniform.

I knew the basic distinctions between the two (residuary vs veterans) but I wasn't sure about the residuary uniform, if their wore regulation when they took over residuary status, or if they took on a new uniform when their original regiment was disbanded. Thanks for helping clear it up.

You noted the residuaries were capable of regular field service since they were not wounded or disabled, and were made up of recruits as well as veterans (I think the vets got a leave and bonus for signing into the residuary). Do you know if they were actually used in the field or did the residuary units usually do more of the behind the front lines duties? I am trying to recall if I had seen any combat deaths among the residuary rosters that I was looking through, or if the residuary regiments are listed specifically in any battle orders.

Your explanation about the two types of veterans units is really concise and well written and easy to understand. Thanks.

Another question I have is, out of many many VRC Companies

it seems that two were formed specifically in Iowa:

169th Company, 2nd Battalion Organized at Keokuk, Iowa, April 29, 1864. Consolidated with 172nd Company, 2nd Battalion, August 21, 1865.

172nd Company, 2nd Battalion Organized at Davenport, IA., June, 1864. Mustered out by detachments July 29 to November 25, 1865.

Does anyone know where I can get a list of the rosters for these Companies?
