The more I think about it, the reference that made me think that might have been a little 1860s British booklet about rifle sights. I don't recall the exact title (I don't have it with me here in Iraq :), but it was by Lord Bury. I'm thinking that maybe a hooded foresight was called a globe sight in there. But not sure.
