hexagon carbine

When I was a young child, I used to play with an old cap and ball carbine that my GGranduncle used in the WBS. (He was in the 9th VA Cav.) It had a hexagon shaped barrel and the stock had an extreme curved butt with a brass butt plate and brass "patch box" cut into the side. I remember the bore was bigger than my thumb, but I was only 10 when my dad traded it for a 1903 WW I 30-06 in 1959. Any idea what this was?
