Well, if it had a hex barrel. it wasn't a carbine. The only carbine that comes to mind with a brass patch box was the early slant breech Sharps carbine but it had a round barrel.
Your description sounds more like a Pennsylvania or Kentucky rifle with the description of a brass patch box, hex barrel & distinct butt stock. Are you sure it wasn't a long barrel rifle?
