Interesting note on the Last Stand panorama painting produced for bars (the artist escapes me...I had a chance to get one and let it slip by, wheteher it is expensive or not, I don't know, but it was the one I grew up with). In it there is a figure in buckskin in the foreground looking into the fight with Indians and soldiers fighting. He faces the fighting so you can't see his face. he is holding a rifle. One of the rumors at the time was that only a whiteman with military experience could lead the Indians to be able to defeat Custer!
