On, first link, at the beginning of the CW Custer was a Captain of the 7th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. By 1865, he received a temporary war time promotion to Major-General of the Volunteer Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. At the end of the war, he reverted to his permanent rank of Captain, in 1866 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and received command of the 7th US Cavalry, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. Lost his rank after being found guilty on several charges, one being guilty of absence without leave of his command. Lost his commission & pay for one year. Captain Custer was again given command of the 7th Cavalry and his commission of Lieutenant Colonel of the 7th Cavalry. He also faced charges in a Federal Case of murder, found not guilty, however the State also charged him with murder but by that time the Army transferred him to Fort Lincoln. Had he not been killed by the Indians at the battle of Little Bighorn, he was to be returned to Kansas to face State murder charges. He was a Lt. Colonel at the time of his death not a Major-General as marked on the head stone.
