When I was a kid, my uncle gave me a gift of American Heritage each month. One of them had the Remington painting on the cover I posted about previously. I failed to mention that in this painting, he also had CUSTER in beaded moccasins! I will try and dig it up. It was the first article I read on the battle and Custer. The article was about the man who killed Custer...supposedly.......White Bull as I recall. he talked about a vicious hand to hand fight with White Bull striking Custer many times with his quirt (lariat) and Custer biting him etc. The article also had a pictograph and if different from the others,I will post about it.
It was however my understanding that the Lakota really did not know much about Custer if anything....that it was the Northern Cheyenne and the Southern Cheyenne who knew him from previous dealings and it was only after the furor died down and the realization of no retribution that some came forward about allegedly knowing about Custer and claiming that they killed him. Is that still correct?
