Looking at the order of battle I do not see the 43rd Mississippi listed as being at Big Black River Bridge. While it was present at Chickasaw Bluff, the regiment only arrived with the rest of Hébert’s Brigade on the 1st of January as reinforcements after the fighting had ended. I strongly suspect that the Mississippians did not receive any battle honour for this engagement since the 3rd Louisiana in the same brigade did not have any such an inscription on its flag.

Hébert’s report on Snyder’s Bluff (April 1863) gives a total of only three Confederate casualties, one of which was from the 3rd Louisiana. Here again note that the existing 3rd Louisiana flag does not list Snyder’s Bluff as a battle honour.

The issuance of General Maury’s large pattern flags took place in August 1863. Thus Vicksburg would have been the last possible battle honour on the flag; it was unusual for new battle honours to be added to an existing flag. But the 1864 Col Richardson flag of course could have included both Chickamauga and Kennesaw Mountain.
