Here is a better reconstructed image of what the MHF canton might have looked like. My final conclusions are that given the position and size of the remaining two stars and the position of the missing star in-between, the flag had to have been an eight star variant Confederate States first national flag with seven stars in a circle. In my attempt to match the artist's rendition of a 2/3 circle of stars I tried squeezing four stars in the gap at the top of the flag where they would be located but found there was just not enough room if we are to keep the spacing between the stars close to even.
