Re: Pennsylvania regiments that lost flags

Yes the 149th Pa did lose their flags, its been difficult to say if the 2nd Ms or 42nd Ms or Brockenbrough's Va brigade did. Col Brockenbourgh claims his brigade captured 2 flags on day 1. They only advanced when 2 regiments of Daniel's brigade hit the Union line from the north.

I think there are more Union flags that were captured but either lost to history or the infomation is out there somewhere. Gettysburg Union captured flags is very difficult to track down. Howard's corps had to have lost some flags. But in the OR's only the 3rd Maine and 11th US Regulars admit to losing a flag.

When I contacted Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois flag curators it always comes up blank, they dont have a clue or they are full of pride. Several of Howard's regiments have files completly missing.

Its difficult, but thats how I like it. I will be at Gettysburg this July 1st, 2nd, 3rd. I will be looking around for the Gettysburg experts and see what they have to say or if they have files on these regiments I suspect might have lost a flag.

Hay's 4 flags is usually the most talked about subject, did the 75th Ohio or 25th Ohio lose a flag? Did Hay's men take a battery guidon? Gordon and Early and Doles must have captured a dozen flags on day 1.

I have alot of questions so we will see what they say at Gettysburg.

Have a good morning,

Shawn
