Cummings' Brigade at Vicksburg

All of the messages regarding the 34th Georgia Infantry have reminded me of my own ancestor's service in the 41st Georgia Infantry, also a unit of Cummings' Brigade in the Vicksburg Campaign.

Though I'm familiar with the damage done to this brigade at Champion Hill and the retreat to Vicksburg, I know little about this brigade's history during the siege. I know they were located at the South end of the Confederate fortifications in proximity to South Fort. I have read that they saw little, if any, direct action with Union infantry during the siege, because of their location; however, I have read that their location was an unhealthy one due to nearby marshes or swamp and the bombardment of South Fort.

Does anyone have additional information about Cummings' Brigade during the Vicksburg siege that confirms these perceptions?

Thanks,

Jim
