I suspect that the 43rd Tennessee also had approximately 50% sick or in hospital by the end of the siege.

One item re Mississippi may be found in Pvt. Giddens', 3rd Tenn. Inf., letter to his wife on March 2, 1863, where he noted:

"Linda, this is a sickly place soldiers are dying and Tennesseans can’t stand to this climate and drink this watter. I am told by Louisianians that the Georgians died here last summer like sheep with the rot."
