Re: Lt. Judson C. Sapp, 2nd Regt. GA Vol Inf.

On Aug. 1, 1863, the 2nd Georgia Regiment was encamped with Benning's Brigade near Culpeper Courthouse, Va. On that date Buford's Federal cavalry pressed the Confederate brigades of Hampton and Jones so hard that elements of Anderson's Division had to be sent to their aid. General A. P. Hill reported,

On August 1, Anderson's division was sent out on the road to Brandy [Station], to repel some of the enemy's cavalry, which had driven back our cavalry and were quite near the court-house. This was handsomely done by Mahone's brigade and Perry's, and with but trifling loss.
(O.R., Ser. I, Vol. XXVII/2, p. 609)

Federal casualties were reported to be 21 killed, 104 wounded, and 20 captured or missing, so this was not an insignificant action. (O.R., Ser. I, Vol. XXVII/1, p. 194)

However, General Benning doesn't mention it in his report dated Aug. 3, 1863. He does apologize for the length of his report:

This, major, is a much longer report than I would have had it to be, but, under the order requiring it, I do not see how it could have been shorter. Indeed, I have omitted some things showing the arduousness of the long march, which are, perhaps, called for by the order.
(O.R., Ser. I, Vol. XXVII/2, p. 414-19)

He does mention an action a week earlier at Battle Mountain near Newby's Crossroads, Va., July 24, 1863. Here's General Longstreet's summary of that action:

General Benning's brigade, which had been left on picket at Gaines' Cross-Roads with the Fourth and Fifteenth Alabama Regiments, to await the arrival of Lieut. Gen. A. P. Hill's corps, were attacked by the enemy's cavalry while on the march, each having a smart skirmish.
(O.R., Ser. I, Vol. XXVII/2, p. 362)

Benning doesn't mention casualties. Surely the roll states where these two men were captured or killed; if not the service file of the captured soldier will have the date and place. Could you pass along that information?
