Thank you for the information. Judson's brother, George W. Sapp, served in the 2nd and was captured, reportedly on August 1, in Virgina. It is my guess that he stayed behind to care for Judson. George was later released from prison and detailed by the Secretary of War to manage the family farm in Alexander, Burke County. Federal forces under Baird and Kilpatrick camped there on the evening of December 4, 1864, following their battle with Wheeler. The home still stands today.

I'll be on the lookout for any letters that may be of interest to you. My primary interest is to learn the fate of the adjoining plantation owned by their cousin, Philip Allen Sapp (54th Ala), called Sycamore Grove. It was unoccupied in December. I believe it was the scene of a cavalry skirmish, and was quite possibly burned down by the Federal forces.
