Re: Co E, 48th GA Infantry and Huguenot in VA

Julie, Co. E was organized in Jefferson County on March 4, 1862, and was known as the "Jefferson Volunteers." Capt. R. W. Carswell was later elected Lt Colonel of the regiment. Capt. Thomas N. Polhill was killed at Gettysburg. 1st Lt. W. A. Spier was killed at Chancellorsville in May 1863. 2nd Lts. were William J. Smith and Jeremiah Winter, Jr. By coincidence I was at Huguenot Springs Cemetary for the first time today, it turns out to be only two miles from my new home in Midlothian, Virginia. I did not copy the identified Georgia burials but will do so in the near future. According to a pamphlet, about 250 Confederates are buried there but only 93 have been identified and marked to date. The hotel burned circa 1889 but this little cemetery is well maintained. I hope to identify others who died there so that appropriate markers can be ordered for them. Soldiers from 10 Confederate states are represented. Tom
