Re: 19th regiment GA Infantry-Howell

Here is a link to a transcription of names taken from a muster roll of Company "B", 19th Georgia Infantry :

My 3rd Great-Grandfather was also with this company. I understand most were born in Ireland or of Irish-descent;as was my ancestor.
From the original 85 men of this company only 11 survived the war:

Here is a list of known survivors:

Captain John Keely
2nd Lieut. John McGee(my 3rd G-Grandfather)
Corporal James McGee (my 3rd G-Uncle)
Nicholas Rooney
Martin Neely
Michael "Mike" Haverty
Martin N. Nealon
John Mann

Flag of Company B ("Jackson Guards")
The Atlanta Southern Confederacy newspaper of May 23, 1861 has the flag presentation ceremony for the Jackson Guards listed.

The flag is described as being: "a most beautiful one, tastefully gotten up and made of fine silk. On one side it has the Harp and Shamrock and on the other the inscription "Our Cause Is Just."

Description of company "B" flag from Google Book Search;
1.)"Irish-themed colors bearing Company B,"Jackson Guards"
2.) "The original flag of the Irish company in the 19th Georgia
was green with a harp and shamrock"

Uniform of Company B ("Jackson Guards)
Before the war the "Jackson Guards" were a militia company from Atlanta, at that time they were called the "Irish Volunteers". I'am not sure why it was changed to the "Jackson Guards", maybe it refers to William Jackson, who was an Irish patriot during the rebellions in Ireland.

From the description made by a lady who visited the camp of Company "B" at their training camp(McDonald) at Big Shanty,Georgia in 1861:

"beautifully uniformed in dark green with gold trimmings and large dark hats with drooping plumes"

During the war their uniforms were probably replaced with grey or butternut uniforms. I have read one account that the 19th Georgia wore butternut-colored uniforms and another claims grey. Maybe they had their uniforms replaced as they wore out.

Here is a Google Book search about the Irish(from Atlanta) in this company from "The Journal of the American-Irish Historical Society printed 1900 ;
