I have been researching Georgia unit flags for well over 12 years for a book that I will be doing on the topic. I have several files on 4th Georgia flags including the company colors, one of which still exists today.

There was also an ANV flag of the 4th Georgia that was sent to the state adjutant general in July, 1863. I have several period newspaper reports that discuss this. The flag was probably marked with battle honors in dark blue paint with the last honor being for "Fredericksburg". The 4th GA was part of Robert Rodes' Division, formerly DH Hill's Division, and the full division received new flags marked with these honors in April, 1863. This flag's location is unknown today but it was used at some post-war CS veteran reunions as well as ceremonies for the funeral of Gen. Clement Evans.

The two flags at the MOC for the regiment have been noted by Phil already. The flag with the ten remaining stars was sent to the MOC is 1980 according to the big period newspaper article I have. The other flag, the fragment, is an enigma. I would bet that the white painted unit designation is a post-war item. This was sometimes done to help people recall what flag was which at reunions. This is indeed the case with two Tennessee flags that I know of.

I have not yet worked up the order of appearance of the battle flags for the 4th Georgia but a First National would have been their first flag. I would bet that the missing ANV flag was their third flag actually, with the one saved at Spotsylvania being the replacement for that one and the fragment being their last flag. So where is their second flag?
