Battle Record of the 4th GA INF REGT

The 4th is one of my favorite regiments. The 4th Georgia was organized at Augusta Ga. in April 1861. They served in Virginia from June 1861,until Appomatox CH,April,1865. They were an important part of the Doles'/Cook Georgia Brigade/Rodes' division/Ewell's Corp/Army of Northern Virginia. The companies were: Co A The Southern Rifles...Co B LaGrange Light Guard...Co. C Twiggs County Volunteers Co. D West Point Guard (West Point is a town on the Chattahoochee River) C. E Albany Guard...Co F Toombs Volunteers...Co. G Glover Guards...Co H Baldwin Blues...Co. I Macon County Volunteers and Co. K Sumter Light Guard. Many of the companies had been military organizations before the war started. George Doles had The Baldwin Blues and the Blues were considered one of the best drilled/disciplined units Georgia sent in the early days of the war. Doles was a natural leader, loved by his men and he molded his brigade (which by Gettysburg consisted of the 4th, 12th, 21st,and 44th Regiments/Georgia Infantry) into one of Lee's best. When he was killed in 1864,it was considered griveous in nature, and one that Lee could ill afford. Phil Cook of the 4th Ga was promoted ,took over the brigade. Worn out by 4 years of intense combat, only 350 men surrendered to General Grant from all 4 of the brave Ga. regiments.

Flagwise: I occasionally try to track down information on the 4th's flag. I do have a little info: In the museum of the Confederacy...currently in Richmond...they possses: An Army of Northern Virginia battleflag, ten stars remaining,(43 1/2 x 47 1/2 inches...with losses). This was the second battleflag issued to the unit. At Spotsylvania, the wounded colorbearer concealed the flag to avoid its capture. This flag was sent to Milledgeville,Ga. to George Doles' widow for safeeeping. The museum also has a fragment from the 4th's 3rd battleflag, all that exists is a 2 1/2 x 7 inch fragment, which hasthe unit designation written in white paint. (Perhaps the last flag was shredded and passed among the survivors of the 4th.) I believe a lot of Southern units did this at Appomatox. Hope this helps
