Alan,

I agree but maybe it is like the units that like to be Zouaves. The uniforms served no practical purpose but it was chic and distinctive. Maybe "heavy" infantry at this point in history was distinctive. It is much like the men choosing their names to make them more distinctive if they were only being tongue in cheek. I'll dig a little more when I am a closer to home this weekend.
