Re: 18th Georgia Infantry Muster Rolls

Thanks for the information Greg. I was at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. about four or five years ago and was allowed to see the original muster rolls for Cobb’s Legion Cavalry Battalion. They were in deplorable condition and I was very surprised I was allowed to handle and view them. I asked to see them again about two years ago and was told they can no longer be viewed by the public, which is totally understandable. The National Archives only has the originals – they don’t have copies on microfilm. The Georgia Archives has the Cobb’s Legion Cavalry Battalion muster rolls on microfilm, but they can only be viewed at the Archives. They don’t have the type of microfilm that additional microfilm copies can be made from. I assume if the Georgia Archives has the muster rolls for Cobb’s Legion Cavalry on microfilm, then they should also have the ones for the 18th GA Infantry. I’m going to contact them to see if they can make me hard copies of the ones for company C of the 18th.

There isn’t a Union prisoner of war record for my ancestor in his compiled service record and his wife passed away before Confederate pensions were started.

I have a copy of one of the Athens, GA wartime newspapers on microfilm and I’ve found numerous casualty lists in it, but none for the time period of my ancestor’s capture or death. I’ll have to check the newspapers for some of the other cities you mentioned.
