Mr. Ezzard,

Your ancestor was not retained in the reorganization and since he was an officer he was discharged from the army. He was not the only one. Officers that were not retained were discharged or transferred to other duties if positions were available. Captain Ezzard is not shown on a roster of Field & Staff and Company Officers of Lee's Corps, Army of Tennessee, Henderson's Brigade, dated, May 2, 1865. The reorganization took place on or about April 9, 1865 and your ancestor has in his Georgia Confederate Indigent Pension file a parole dated May 12, 1865, Kingston, Georgia. It took men that walked from Greensboro, North Carolina to north Georgia about twenty days to make the journey so that would support the time line.

Company A, 36th Georgia was from Cherokee County, Georgia and it would be logical for him to head home. All Confederate soldiers in north Georgia, regardless of their accountability status, were ordered to go to Kingston, Georgia to be formally surrendered by General William Tatum Wofford on May 12, 1865 and then receive their paroles. About 4,000 men were surrendered but unfortunately, as far as I am aware, a formal list has not been located by historians at this point. The only historical record is from other sources like your ancestor retaining their parole or men noting in some other form that they had surrendered at Kingston.

I assume you have seen his pension file and some other supporting documents in the file. I want to look at these other documents a little more closely over the next couple of days for other clues.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
