Thank you so much for your help. This man means very much to us, and these questions have been unanswered for a long time.I would like to ask a few more things: G.W.Ezzard left a statement late in life which reads in part: "Fought the last battle at Smithfield. N.C.after Lee surrendered. Mustered out at__________. I had already gone home and got my parole at Kingston. Georgia." Obviously, he was wrong when he said "after Lee surrendered" Where did he muster out from? What did he mean by-" Ihad already got my parole." ? What do you make of this statement? Also, where did the April 9, reorganization take place?Where are the records for it?Why was he not retained?(too many officers for too few troops?) Where can I see the roster of reorganizatuion of troops( 36 Ga.) ? Also, in the muster roll for Co. A., 36 Ga., in Confederate Military History, the statement is made-"Pension records show he surrendered at Smithfield,N.C. April 1865." What does that mean (surrendered)? He said nothing about that in his statement. Also, would he have had a horse to ride home, if he was an officer, or could he have taken the train?. (he came to Smithfield on one.) How can I view his pension file and his other records? He was about 86 when he applied for a pension.I have been to Mitchner's Station where Johnston ( with my g. grandfather ) camped near Smithfield after Bentonville and have a few artifacts from there. I am just trying to put it all together. Any help that you can give will be great. Also, I am in the dark about his movement from enlistment until the fall of Vicksburg. Where do I go for that? The movement (to Mississippi) and then to Bentonville is also confusing. I have been unable to find a history of the 36th Georgia. Please forgive the many questions. I can't help it. My father used to sit in George Washington Ezzard's lap overlooking the valley outside of Dalton Ga. and My great grandfather would recite to him:" Hand me down my old knapsack, Mary. Hand me down my suit of grey. I am going out parading with the boys of '63." Sincerely, Gray Ezzard
