The six Georgia regiments composing Alexander R. Lawton's Brigade (13th GA, 26th GA, 31st GA, 38th GA,
60th GA & 61st GA) left Savannah in early June on different trains and on different days. The brigade at the
time was reportedly the largest in the Confederate Army at the time, and its initial strength was placed
anywhere between 5,000 and 7,000 at the time.
Its been years since I've done the research, but if you consult the June 1862 Savannah Republican newspaper
(on microfilm @ the state archives, UGA Library, & GA Historical Society), you might be able to locate some
26th GA - related stories and perhaps more clues regarding your ancestor's final days. Its quite possible the
train bearing the 26th GA stopped in Charlottesville.
