Re: Company G, 56th GA Infantry

Good response. The James Wills mentioned was burried under the wrong name. "Willis" was a paper work error that began with his enlistment. The name was spelled Willis on his enlistment when he got his $50 bounty bonus. He crossed out the Willis name and rewrote Wills;however, down on the bottom of the page the word "duplicate' may have been the cause of the misnomer. He was embalmed and most privates were not. He had several first cousins at Vicksburg who likely took care of the payment for this. This ancestor of mine worked for his grandfather, Lt James Green Pittman RS, as his overseer until his death in 1851. In the 1850 census James H Wills was listed as living with his father in one Co and with his grandfather in Jackson Co as "James Well." Seems like it is a easy name to spell. The widow Frances Angeline Strickland Wills moved to Crawford Tx in 1871 and my father inherited the farm in the 1970s. If any kin read this, I would be happy to share documents and pictures.
