Can't understand how anyone would associate this regiment with General James Cantey. In 1864 General Walthall was promoted and given command of a division. Cantey's brigade was part of the new division; Walthall's old brigade was not. The 27th Mississippi Regt remained in the same brigade (Walthall, Benton, Brantley) throughout the war.
