Re: Cobb Guards, GA Infantry/22 BN GA Heavy Artill

My GGrandfather was born 11/08/1829, in Fairfield County, SC and migrated to Randolph County, GA in 1841. He would have been 35 yrs old at the time he entered the service. Can't really be sure if he was conscripted or entered voluntarily. Going in that late in the war at his age makes me believe he was conscripted, but I don't really know. I'm sure the family must have had some military fervor and patriotism early in the war as my Grandfather (born 1861) was named Manassas Victor Knighton. As best I can determine, Moses G was involved in the North Carolina campaign, having fought at Averasboro and Bentonville, but I have not been able to confirm it. The after action reports at that time in the War were incomplete, some commanders not even writing them. While searching for his name on the NPS Web site, I notice that some of the names listed show an "alternate" name. What does this mean? Were they serving as alternates for the person identified in small print?
