J. R. McAfee signed one roll for the 39th Mississippi Regiment as Assistant Surgeon. Assignments to regiments, hospitals and other stations could be and were changed at the discretion of the Medical Director and his subordinates. This appears to have been a temporary assignment based on pressing needs, as the 39th Mississippi regimental summary mentions 25% of its members were sick during June 1862.
