Just a thought, While researching the Caroline Light Artillery, part of Lightfoot's Brigade in defense of Richmond, I found that at Appomattox Only 31 out of over 100 were listed as captured. The only officer listed as "in command" of these soldiers was an Ast. Surgeon. No weapons were listed with these captured men. I speculate (with the possibility of being dead wrong) that these men were either sick and/or wounded and the rest of the Artillery and their guns etc. did not surrender. Other records indicate that the soldiers of the Caroline Light were given the choice to either surrender or march on to join what was left of the army in North Carolina. Most were paroled in May in Ashland, VA. so I guess they did not make it to NC.
