Confederate numbers at Honey Springs

Most historical sources, including the official Honey Springs website, place the number of Confederate troops engaged at nearly 6,000. I can't understand where this, in my opinion, greatly inflated figure comes from. Cooper had 8 regiments, one battery of artillery, and two squadrons of cavalry available. I have never seen any documentation to show that any Confederate regiment in the Trans-Mississippi, and not at all in the Indian Territory, could bring over 500 men into action in 1863. As far as I know, none of Cooper's regiments could in 1862 either (ref. Pea Ridge, Newtonia, etc.). The average Confederate regimental strength at Honey Springs was more likely less than 500 men. The relatively newly organized and untried regiments of DeMorse (29th Texas) and Martin (5th Texas Partisan Rangers) just might bring the average up to around 500. Adding the battery and the two cavalry squadrons (4 companies total), Cooper might conceivably have 4000 men in action - at best. Any comments, Ralph?
